East Mountain "Kids" Picnic

Plans are set for our East Mountain (A.Montoya/Roosevelt) picnic in August and a Plan B (if necessary). Looking forwards to seeing you East Mountain folks! There are some A.Montoya/Roosevelt kids we haven't made contact with yet, so pass the word (see list below)***.

We anticipate each of you will bring a guest. Our reserved Cienega Group Picnic site has a limit of 50 people and 15 cars. Please RSVP by June 30 so we know how many to expect and can further plan.

Date: Saturday - August 7, 2021

Time: 11 am - 2 pm

Place: Cienega Group Picnic Area; Sandia Mountains (see directions and link to USFS map below).

Food and drink: Feel free to bring something to eat and drink for yourself. (You could stop by Burger Boy, Triangle, Cabra Coffee, El Mariachi, or Green Side on the way up for take-out). Bring water as there is no drinking water at the picnic area.

If you'd like to bring food/drink to share - feel free to do that too! We don't plan to coordinate food.

Plan B: Ribs Hickory Pit Barbeque in Cedar Crest- near the CC Post Office. If forest fire, inclement weather or other restrictions come up before the date, Ribs can accommodate our group inside or outside seating. They open at 11 on Saturday.

RSVP: Please RSVP by June 30, that you are coming and if you are bringing a guest(s) and include their name. Also, when did you start A.Montoya/Roosevelt? What is the name of your spouse, significant other, friend or whoever you are bringing?

Parking and Permits: The site is limited to 15 vehicles, so please consider car-pooling. If you have an America the Beautiful Interagency Pass or Sandia Annual Pass, be sure to display it.

*** If you have contact with any of the following people, please let them know about the picnic - or if you know anyone we have missed.

Bertha Rael, Bob Lange, David West, Faith Peterson, Jeanie Linn, Karen Smith, Kathy Ault, Larry Boyes, Lorraine Griego, Paula Norris, Pauline Zamora, Raymond Jaramillo, Rick Roberts, Donna Whitman, LuAnn Dawirs. (We have an e-mail for Larry, but he hasn't responded.)

Please join us - we'd love to see each of you! Let us know if you have questions or concerns.

Notes from the US Forest Service site:

Facilities and Parking

DO NOT park in front of any gates. They must be accessible at all times.

Please note that once the ten (10), 'day use' passes are distributed to your party, a $3.00 fee will be charged at the Fee Station on the site for any remaining vehicles associated with your party, unless you have, and display, a Sandia Annual Pass or an America the Beautiful Interagency Pass. Have Questions? (505) 281-3304 (Sandia Ranger District - Tijeras).

The picnic site offers a semi-private space that can accommodate up to 50 people. There is no shelter, however, the trees provide plenty of shade. Water and electricity, firewood/charcoal are not available at the site. Picnic tables, grills, accessible vault toilets and bear proof trash receptacles are provided. Bears frequent the area; please use appropriate containers for food and garbage

Natural Features

Located approximately a half mile off the 536 Scenic Byway, the Cienega Picnic site is fairly flat. There is a stream that runs through it, that has created a wet meadow. It is encircled by trees and an interpretive trail/sidewalk.

From Albuquerque, drive east on I-40 to Exit 175 to Cedar Crest. Follow N-14/The Turquoise Trail for approximately 6.5 miles, to NM 536/Sandia Crest Scenic Byway. Turn left onto 536 and follow it for about two miles. Turn left at the Cienega/Sulphur Picnic Area sign. Stay to your left and follow the road for about .6 miles to the “T”. Turn right and continue until you reach the gated area to your right.
